Your Rights and Privacy

What happens to my hospital data?

  • When you're admitted to a New Zealand hospital with a cardiac condition, key clinical information is securely entered into the ANZACS-QI registry as part of routine care. This includes details about your treatment and outcomes.
  • Secure Storage: Identifiable data (like your NHI number) is stored securely on servers managed by Enigma Solutions Ltd. Only authorised users can access it, and no copies are made or distributed.
  • Encryption & De-identification: Before any data is used for analysis or research, it is encrypted and de-identified. This means your personal details are removed, and your NHI is replaced with a secure, encrypted version.
  • Data Sharing for Research: De-identified data is sent to the University of Auckland for reporting and research. It is stored in secure servers and accessed only within controlled environments—data cannot be downloaded or copied.
  • Privacy Protection: Your name is never searchable in ANZACS-QI. Access is strictly controlled and based on user roles and location.
  • Ethical Use: All research using ANZACS-QI data must be approved by governance groups, including VAREANZ, to ensure ethical and culturally appropriate use. Only anonymised data is ever shared externally.
  • Your data helps improve cardiac care across New Zealand through audits, quality improvement, and research—while keeping your privacy protected at every step.

Who sees my information?

  • Clinical Staff: Hospital staff are assigned access levels (Clinic, Clinic+, Hospital, Hospital Admin) based on their role. They can only view identifiable patient data from their own hospital.
  • Data Governance Group: Members have Steering Committee access to unidentifiable data for oversight. Some may also have clinical access at their hospital.
  • Regional Liaison Officers: One per region (Northern, Midlands, Central, Southern) can access identifiable data across hospitals in their region for oversight.
  • District Staff: Can view non-identifiable data across hospitals in their district. They must comply with confidentiality clauses in their employment contracts.
  • Audit Access: One designated user per district may access unencrypted patient data for audit purposes.
  • System Support (Enigma Solutions Ltd.): Helpdesk staff have National Support access to resolve technical issues. All support activity is logged, and access is strictly limited to genuine support needs.
  • Enigma and the UoA enforces strict privacy policies and requires staff to sign confidentiality agreements. All data handling complies with the ANZACS-QI Terms of Reference.

Can I opt out?

  • Patients are not required to give consent for their data to be collected in ANZACS-QI, as this is approved by the New Zealand Health and Disability Ethics Committee (Reference MEC/07/19/EXP/AM28) for national quality improvement purposes.

    Patients can:
  • Request access to their ANZACS-QI data via their healthcare provider.
  • Opt out at any time by informing their health professional. If they do, no further data will be collected, and any previously recorded data will be deleted.
